Learn about the history and modern celebration of this Mexican holiday at Cleveland State University (2121 Euclid Ave., Cleveland) from 10:00am-2:00pm on Wednesday May 5. Colombian salsa comes to Cincinnati The most prominent salsa band from Colombia, Grupo Niche will be performing on Saturday May 8 2004 at The Madison (730 Madison Avenue, Covington, KY 41011 Phone: 859-655-4807) Doors open at 8:00pm, free dance lessons 8:30-9:00, opening band Cincy's own Salsa Caliente begins at 9:00pm. Oscar D'Leon, the "Lion of Salsa", has recorded more than 50 albums, has received several gold records and numerous awards and honors. His name is recognized all over the world. Oscar is a talented sonero, with exceptional improvising skills and an extraordinary showman who takes control of the stage before harmonizing the first melody. La India, nicknamed the "Princess of Salsa" by Tito Puente, is one of salsa's most recognized names. She has sung with Marc Anthony, Tito Nieves, Oscar D'Leon and Tino Puente. La India's albums Sobre el Fuego, Sola and her current release Latin Song Bird: Mi Alma y Corazón have received Grammy nominations. Latin Song Bird: Mi Alma y Corazón was awarded 2003's Billboard's Tropical/Salsa album of the year/female. Produced by Emilio Estefan, K.C. Porter, Isidro Infante and Jose Gazmey, the album mixes pop ballads, bachata, boleros and merengue with passionate salsa. Festival Latino is a free event, and draws people from all over Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and beyond. There are plenty of hotels in the area, but they sell out, so book early!
