They have a close resemblance to DNA; you can’t find two car number plates that are identical and bear a specific registration number for a single vehicle. The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) maintains a central database that possesses all information pertaining to registration numbers.

Different formats have been followed by car number plates for years; this in turn helps them to cope with the increasing traffic every year. In 1903, we first saw car registrations being made mandatory following the introduction of the Motor Car Act. Administering registration numbers were the responsibility of the local council, since the DVLA was not in operation at that time. The details of registration had to reach another state council before the owners shifted to that state or sold the vehicle off. These days, the roads are experiencing a sharp rise in traffic volume; this in turn has contributed largely towards the current problem. The failure of the council system was inevitable regarding the car registrations.

DVLC (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre) was established in 1965. With time it expanded its operations involving administration of car number plates within the nation. Initially, it had 81 regional offices besides its Swansea-based head office. Shutting down of several regional DVLA offices was the result of gradual inclusion of post offices within this vehicle registration system. Till 1985, the number of regional offices had come down to 53; it was then that the DVLC achieved the name of DVLA. At present, it has some 40 regional offices around Wales, Scotland and England.

DVLA/DVLC has been introduced with 3 distinct number formats for registration: new or current style registration numbers, prefix registration numbers and suffix registration numbers. In 1963 the suffix number plates were introduced, and they continued successfully till 1983. Besides an age identification letter, three letters were displayed in the format which accepted up to three numbers. This format was altered as the registration plate bore an age identifier letter at the beginning; it was then that the suffix series get exhausted and prefix car registration numbers were introduced. It was then followed by 3 numbers and then 3 letters. Both for the prefix and suffix series the registrations O, Q, Z, U, and I were never introduced. In 2001 DVLA number plates of the latest style were introduced for the first time. A format of 2 letters which is followed by 2 numbers followed by 3 letters is being displayed by these registration numbers. The vehicle’s age since its registration can be easily determined with the help of these numbers; the location where the vehicle first got registered is indicated by the first two letters. NE02 ABC is an example of the latest form of DVLA number plate.
