Cincode Mayo

Learnabout the history and modern celebration of this Mexican holiday at ClevelandState University (2121 Euclid Ave., Cleveland) from 10:00am-2:00pm on WednesdayMay 5.  Schedule includes films and discussion on Cinco de Mayo,brunch/snacks and a Mexican craft demonstration.  Event will be held atUniversity Center, Room 364.  Info: 216 687-9394

 

Thencelebrate as Cinco de Mayo parties around town will feature a couple ofour favorite bands!  On Wednesday May 5, NoelQuintana and Latin Crew will be at The Blind Pig(1228 W. 6th Street, Warehouse District) and on Friday May7, Sammy DeLeon y su Orquesta will be at WishNightclub (621 Johnson Court, Warehouse District).

 

GreatLatin jazz flutist Dave Valentin and theVince Seneri Quartet (Latin Flute, Organ, Guitar,Drums) will be performing at NightTown (12387 CedarRoad, Cleveland Heights) on Thursday May 6. Dave Valentin started playing Latin percussion at the age of five and beganperforming professionally at the age of eleven in New York City. At the late ageof sixteen he picked up the flute for the first time.  He hasn'tstopped.  Throughout his travels in different countries and ethniccommunities, Dave has collected many flutes, most of which he travels with anduses at his performances. Some of the flutes he uses are from; Africa, Japan,Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, and the American Indian. Moresalsa superstars come to Ohio  Save the dates for the 2004Festival Latino at Bicentennial Park in DowntownColumbus on Friday-Saturday June 18-19. The largest Hispanic/Latino event in Ohio, the two days are filled with non-stopmusic, food, and fun.  This year, the festival site is even bigger! And most exciting are the headlining performances of OscarD'Leon on Friday June 18 at 10:30pm and LaIndia on Saturday June 19 at 10:00pm.

    Oscar D'Leon, the "Lion ofSalsa", has recorded more than 50 albums, has received several gold recordsand numerous awards and honors. His name is recognized all over the world. Oscaris a talented sonero, with exceptional improvising skills and an extraordinaryshowman who takes control of the stage before harmonizing the first melody.

    La India, nicknamed the"Princess of Salsa" by Tito Puente, is one of salsa's most recognizednames. She has sung with Marc Anthony, Tito Nieves, Oscar D'Leon and TinoPuente. La India's albums Sobre el Fuego, Sola and her currentrelease Latin Song Bird: Mi Alma y Corazón have received Grammynominations. Latin Song Bird: Mi Alma y Corazón was awarded 2003'sBillboard's Tropical/Salsa album of the year/female. Produced by Emilio Estefan,K.C. Porter, Isidro Infante and Jose Gazmey, the album mixes pop ballads,bachata, boleros and merengue with passionate salsa.
